Photo Book Software Tips

Once you have downloaded the Burblepix free software the following tips and tricks will help producing your photo book that much easier! Let us help you be more creative. Print these tips out and refer to them when working in the software.

  1. How to download additional Content PC
Downloading additional content like quickbooks, clipart and calendars is easy.

If you have already got the Burblepix software installed on your PC for photo books but now want to add some more content then this tip is worth noting. Let’s use a quickbook as an example. First close the Burblepix software and then go to the website www.burblepix.co.za/quickbooks. Click on the relevant download icon and this will allow you to download the specific content you need. Once downloaded double click on the file which will extract the content and install it onto your current Burblepix software. When you next open the Burblepix software the new content will be available to use.

  2. How To Download Additional Content MAC.
    1. Additional content will supplement the Mac software you already have loaded.
    2. Download the additional content of your choice then temporarily save it to your desktop.
    3. Next open your Burblepix software and click on “configuration” then “manually update files” as below.
    4. Select the oac file that you saved on the desktop.
    5. The software will run the update.
    6. Once completed it will say “successfully updated” click “ok”.
    7. The programme will then automatically restart. When you look at the new options you will so the most recent software that you downloaded.
  3. Updating Your Current Mac Software
    You first need to unistall the old software. If you want to back up any albums do this first. These files are located as follows;

Macintosh HD/ users/ shared/ burblepix / mpr500_albums - simply copy the files from this folder and save them somewhere in case you ever need them. You should be able to drop these back into the same folder of the new software. My recommendation is that you start your first album on the new software from scratch.

    Now to uninstall the software

    Follow these steps;
    1. Go to Macintosh HD / applications / burblepix.app - You need to put burblepix.app in the trash
    2. Next go to Macintosh HD / users / shared / burblepix - You need to put "burblepix folder" in the trash
    3. If you have the logo on your doc then also drop this in the trash.
The uninstall is complete and you can now install the software from disc following the on screen instructions.

  4. Safe area
The Safe area known as bleed is a printing term used to indicate the area with a background image that will be trimmed off after the file is printed and cut down to the finished size. Since the safe area will be trimmed off during the cutting process, there should be no text or other important information in the safe area. We recommend all images be stretched to the edge of the page as the album will be trimmed between the safe area line and the edge of the page other text and graphics should stay inside the Safe area. This ensures a more professional appearance and eliminates any risk of type or images being accidentally "nicked" during trimming.

  5. Importing images from Facebook
Choose new album and select the size album you want.

Click the green arrow on the top right hand corner to go onto the next page.

On page two at the bottom left side there is a button which says “Facebook” click this and sign into Facebook using your email and account password.

    Select ‘log in with Facebook’.

In the left hand window your computer contents will be displayed, select ‘C-drive’ ‘Facebook downloads’ and select a friend (or yourself) from the files, once you have selected a Facebook photo album your images will be displayed in the middle window.

Select your desired images by either choosing each individual image or you can select all the images. To select individual images select the photo and click the green arrow which will move your image into the right hand side of the page, alternatively select multiple images by holding down the control key (Ctrl). To select all the images at once click the ‘select all’ button at the bottom of the page then click the green arrow at the top right hand corner of the page to continue.

You can now go through the creation process as normal .
  6. Re-order your photo book
if you’ve ordered a photo book in the past you can re-order it in just a few steps. With the Burblepix software it is easy to re-order copies of your photo books at any time for friends, family or as a gift. You can also make some changes to your old photo book before you re-order. Add new photo's, extra pages, gloss or change the text in your photo book.

Step 1 Open the Burblepix software
On the welcome screen, click on 'Open Album'.. If you want to re-order one of these, click on the album. And say open you will receive a message that will tell you the album has already been ordered and paid for, you will open it by clicking ‘yes’

    Step 2 Change size
Once you have opened your album, it is possible to make changes to the photo book. For example you could order your photo book in a bigger or smaller size. While editing your photo book, click on the 'Order' tab (not the trolley Icon). Click on the ‘Create another copy’ button to re-order your old photo book in a different size select no when given the option do you want and exact copy. If you want to re-order your photo book in the same size, you can of course skip this step by clicking ‘yes’.

Step 3 Add extra's and make changes
When you're happy with the size of your photo book, you can also make additional changes to your product. For example you can choose to add extra pages and photo's, choose gloss or matt or change the texts you wrote. You can make whatever changes you want to, in the same way you would when creating a new photo book. When you're happy with your photo book and ready to order, the process of ordering is exactly the same as usual. Go to the 'Order now' button, and follow the steps. It's as simple as that!
  7. Set opacity.
If you have chosen a picture as a background you have the option to fade the background or keep as is and then place additional pictures on top using the page layout template which is selected from the left hand panel. To fade the background right click on the background image and select "set opacity"
  8. Low Resolution.
When you are working with the photo book software the images you work with are viewed in low resolution. However when the photo book is processed through our servers all images and backgrounds are converted to high resolution so that your photo book looks fantastic.
  9. Centre your images.
Pictures that you have positioned in your photo book can be centered vertically or horizontally or both. "Right click" the desired image then select "centre in page" and if you want it centered vertically or horizontally.
  10. Clip art: (simple lines)

A simple line can be used to create interesting backgrounds for postcards or photo books by overlaying different colours at different angles and sizes as shown below. For the post card on the left we have simply used the red line found in the clip arts folder in your software, changing the rotation and the size used in conjunction with a custom colour background, next some snow flake clip arts (see the last newsletter or tips and tricks from our website on how to download and use any clip arts). Finally overlay your precious images which gives us a beautiful and effective Christmas post card.

The post card on the right took a little more effort (but still not too much). We started with a white background and layered from the bottom to the top a black line, then a red line with a different width, a gap, a red line, a gap, then one very thick red line to give us an area to write on then we repeated the stripes and gaps on the top. Once again overlay your pictures to finish it off.

  11. How to add clip art to your photo books

Clipart can take your already beautiful photo book to another level of design, clipart’s are images with transparent backgrounds, the Burblepix software already has a few standard clipart installed but you may want to find your own, to suit the style of your photo book

    Step 1
    1. Open google
    2. Select images (as shown in diagram below)
    3. Search for the clipart you want followed by typing the word PNG (Portable Network Graphics. A graphics format designed with features like compression and transparency) for example ‘Love png’

    Step 2
    1. Once you have searched images make sure you select large image size, this way you will not download any low res images (as shown in diagram below)
    2. Make sure your image is shown with a white background
    3. Find one you like, I am going to use a PNG of a ribbon spelling out the word Love

    Step 3
    1. Open your selected image by double clicking it
    2. Make sure the file type is a PNG
    3. Right click anywhere on your image, select save as(as shown in diagram below)

    Step 4
    1. Save the PNG in any folder on your computer but make sure you know where you can find that folder, I have created a new folder called PNG on my desktop
    2. Once you have saved it you can close google and open burblepix, make sure you are on the page you want the clip art to appear as it will not appear in any of your libraries, only on your selected page

    Step 5
    1. At the top you will see ‘file, edit, view , format, Design’ you will want to select design a drop down box will appear, select ‘clipart’ then ‘add clipart from file’(as shown in diagram below)
    2. Open your file location, select your PNG and select open(as shown in diagram below)

    Step 6
    1. Once open your clipart will appear in the top left hand corner of your page, drag it and resize it to fit your design, you will notice the clipart is transparent and only shows the ribbon no white background(as shown in diagram below)

Please note some clipart on Google is copyright, it is your own responsibility to find out what copyright each clipart you download has, Burblepix cannot be held responsible for any copyright infringements

  12. Design layout tip
When you’re looking for photo book layouts that will make your work shine, consider the following three layout ideas that will help to make your images pop. Consider a two page spread. Great landscapes of a mountain range. Expansive fields of poppies or wildflowers. A happy couple standing on the beach soon after their wedding. When dramatic moments need to be frozen in time and celebrated for what they are; when your images need to speak for themselves, give them the attention they deserve. Try shifting the angle. When you layout your photo book, think outside of what’s conventional. Shift the photos a bit; skew them on the page to see whether or not you’re able to create a more dramatic angle. You may choose to crop the photo to that angle before having it printed on the page, but sometimes a shift of the scene is enough to make you – and everyone who picks up your photo books – look at things differently. Create a photo montage within your photo book. Maybe you’ll use smaller versions of all of the included photos on the cover of your photo book; maybe you’ll use a montage at the beginning and end of the book. Maybe you’ll use three smaller images along with a larger photo on the page. Grouping related photos can be a way of unifying them; it can also be an effective way of adding more images to the layout. Photo book layout is largely based on your preference, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a reason why an image comes before or after another. Be sure that you’re thinking of the story when you decide on a photo book layout.
  13. Use images on a full page background.
Sometimes it is great to have one picture fill a whole page. One method is to click on the image in the page and then drag the edges to the required size. The problem with this is that the image does not always bleed correctly off the page as it has not been dragged to the very end. The best result is to save the image as a background. To do this "right click" on the desired image that has been dropped onto the photo book. Next select "image size" then "set as page background". If working on a double page spread then you can choose "left page" "right page" or "double page"
  14. Create another copy
How to create another copy of your photo book. Perhaps you want to create a second copy for someone else but edit it slightly without starting the book from scratch. For example you have two sets of Grandparents and want to change some text and a couple of pictures in each book. This is how you do it.
    1. Open burblepix software and the album you are working on or have already ordered.
    2. If it has already been ordered then it will say that it has already been ordered and paid for. Open it anyway.
    3. Once open look at the top tool bar in the programme. The one with File, Edit etc. At the end there is an option to click on “order” not the trolley icon.
    4. Click on order then click “create another copy”. It asks you if you want an exact copy “yes” or “no”. Here you have the option to change the book size (you may want to go bigger or smaller than the original book. If you want to change the book size click “no” and then choose the new size.
    5. This creates a new id for the book which can then be ordered as usual with the trolley icon. You can also make any changes before ordering the book.

  15. Layout
If you have a lot of photo’s spread out over your page or like doing collages this is definitely the tip for you! Instead of sitting for hours trying to get your photos in perfect order all you have to do is select the photo with the best size, hold down the control key (Ctrl) and click the rest of the photo’s, now right click anywhere on any of the photo’s and select ‘make same size’ and then ‘both’ this will make all your selected pictures the same size then right click and select ‘align’ and chose what part of the photo you would like to align, for example if you have three photo’s on the left hand side of the page aligning lefts would be the best option, play around with all the options and see which choice suits you best, remember you can always click undo!

  16. Tips for your holiday photo book.
You have had a fantastic holiday and taken lots a great pictures, why not make a photo book to bring those memories to life! These tips will help give you those finishing touches to help make your photo book that much better.

Start by sorting your photos Selecting your best photos and categorise them into a separate folders. Are there any photos you would like to use as a background be sure to include these as well. You can always add more pictures once you start creating your book.

Be creative with your lay-out Choose the standard lay-out provided by our programme, or let your creativity flow by starting with empty pages. Try setting a picture across one page or two as a page background. Create your very own personal design!

Embellishing your photo book Decorate your book with pictures and other memories you have brought back from your holiday. Why not for example insert the national flag or scan admission tickets and postcards etc.

    Highlight your destination
See if you can look up the map or a street map on Google images of the places you’ve visited. Use Paintshop or Photoshop to describe your route on the map, save it as a jpeg to add it to your photo book.

Create your own personal title Are you going on a beach holiday? You could write a nice title in the sand reading “Mauritius 2010” and use this as the cover to your holiday book! It’s the finishing touches that really make the difference.

  17. Ordering Process
When you finish creating the album and you want to order it, you have to fill in the order and shipment details and perform the payment. When the album is opened in the main editing screen, click on the 'Order' button. The ordering process is done using a wizard: moving from one step to the next is done by clicking on the green arrow buttons on the top of the wizard screen. At any step of the wizard, you may view an interactive preview of the album pages by clicking on the 'Interactive preview' button.

    Order wizard screens

First screen - Display the Order preview. In the screen you can see a preview of the pages so you can see the general look of the album. You may also view an interactive preview of the album pages by clicking on the 'Interactive preview' button.

Second screen - Displays the order summary details. You can select the 'Cover' from the list of available covers, select a 'Finishing' method from the list, fill in your 'Comment', set the number of 'Copies' and select the 'Color correction' method.

If prices are displayed (some installations prices are not available), the price will be set according to your selections. Color correction price is calculated according to the number of pictures in the album.

Depending on the installation and the album type some choices may not be available. For example, 'Color correction' is usually not available so it is hidden in the above screen shot.

Third screen - Select the 'File Sending' method and fill your 'Contact details'.

'File sending' means selecting whether you want to bring the order to the store by yourself or to electronically upload the order over the internet.

Note: electronically sending the order may take a while, depending on the album size and the type of internet connection you have.
Note: if for some reason the electronically upload is not enabled or it was not completed, the system will allow you to create a ZIP file from the order files and bring it to the store by yourself.

Fourth screen - This screen will be auto populated and you can simply move onto the next screen which needs to connect to the web

Once connected the below screen will be auto populated with your contact details however you will need to scroll down to select your delivery method or that you will collect it yourself. A payment method must also be decided which can be by Credit Card or EFT. Make your choice and then select the proceed key.

If you have chosen to pay by credit card you will need to complete the below screen.

Almost there. Click the green arrow once and wait a few moments for the software to create you zip file to be uploaded.

When you finish the ordering process, a receipt will be displayed on the screen. You can also display the receipt after completing the ordering process by opening the album and selecting the ‘View | Show report’ from the menu. It is recommended to print the receipt and keep it until you receive the printed album.

If you chose to bring the order to the store by yourself, then after displaying the receipt, a folder containing the order (as a zip file) will be displayed. You have to burn this file on a CD (or copy it to a “disk or memory stick”) and bring it to the store. Note: it may take a while for the folder with the zipped order to appear on the screen (depending on the album size). After that, you can close the Burblepix software application or start designing a new order.

  18. Resizing
We have some great new clip art in our latest software to use in your photo books to add an extra touch e.g. paper clips, push pins and masking tape. Often when you want to resize these to your relevant picture it is not always easy to keep them in proportion. To do this simply drag and drop the chosen effect onto the photo book page. Click on the object and hold down the control key at the same time. Use the left click on your mouse and resize. Your clip art effect will now be kept in proportion.
  19. Use The Zoom Function
When working in the Burblepix software you view images in low resolution in order to allow the software to run faster. When you submit your order for print the images are converted back to high resolution for the best print quality. It is advisable to use the zoom function when you need to see more detail to check text etc. The helpful zoom function is located on the bottom tool bar. Hover the mouse over the various icons until you see “Zoom in”. There is also the option to “Zoom out”
  20. Capture your Child’s Artwork.
Those of you with kids will know the pride and pleasure they display when presenting you with their latest piece of artwork, but the problem is what to do with them after a while. By taking a close up picture or scanning the artwork you can use the digital file to place in a photo book. A treasured memory for ever.

If you are taking a picture of your child’s art work it is best to take it with a white background. Alternatively you can crop the picture using the Burblepix software. When scanning your pictures make sure the file is saved as a JPG. Either way simply use these files in the software as you would any other picture.
  21. Low Resolution.

  27. Change the order that your pages appear.

  28. Selecting more pictures.

  29. Other short cuts.
There is more than one way to do the same thing and you can decide what works best for you. There are clearly visible menu bars in the photo book software. If you hover the mouse over the icon it will tell you what it does. The other alternative is to use the right click function of the mouse which gives you many different options to be creative with your photo book.
